About

Pet owners love taking pictures of their furry friends and sharing them on social media. People are constantly trying to create unique and aesthetic images of their pets. However, taking these pictures can be challenging, as pets don’t usually care about the art of photography. Owners often use treats to capture the perfect shot, which can be time-consuming and stressful for pets and their owners.

Snap Bowls draws inspiration from wildlife camera traps to let pets take their own pictures while they eat. Integrated with their food bowls, it captures pets at their happiest—mealtime—without any disturbance. This setup keeps pets at ease and delights owners with candid snapshots of their furry friends’ festive moments.

Context

The project emerged from a collaboration with Ann-Elsy Mariampillai during a week-long workshop in February 2023. This workshop, dubbed “Snoop”, took place at HEAD as part of their annual “Semaine de tous les possibles” week led by Albert Schrurs from Coral Studio.

The bond between humans and dogs is deeply rooted in the adage “Like owner, like pet.” This saying reflects that individuals often identify with certain dog breeds, likely because people tend to select pets that mirror themselves.

The workshop aimed to design objects or spaces that enhance the relationship between specific dog owners and their pets. Our focus was on social media creators and their furry friends.

References included Architecture for Dogs by Kenya Hara, Do You Look Like Your Dog by Garrard Gatherings, and the introduction to the original 101 Dalmatians cartoon.

Thanks

A heartfelt thank you to Madog, our distinguished Cardigan Welsh Corgi, for being the centerpiece of our project. We’re equally grateful to Emily Groves and Rhys Williams from Deli Social for their generosity in sharing Madog with us.

Madog often spends time at Deli Social or enjoys the nearby dog parks in Lausanne. Should you happen to see him, please say hi for me.
